Thanks-giving??! (Connie J...)
When the Holiday Season begins, today, and you gather with your families; please be aware.
This time of year, Domestic Violence situations, Depression, Suicides, etc, all seem to come to a head.
We, as a society, have been conditioned to think that at this time of year, we are supposed to be the happiest; when in reality, for some people, this is the complete opposite.
You CANNOT fix another person, or their situation, but sometimes, they just need a little encouragement or reminder that they ARE worthwhile, and worth the battle for themselves.
Self-care is often looked upon as being selfish, etc; but is crucial for any relationship - be it with a significant other, OR even in Friendships. No one can pour from an empty cup.
The sister or brother that seem to have left the well-behaved children at home, and instead brought the monsters to the family dinner - maybe you can help distract the kids, and give that Mom or Dad a little break. I'm sure they would be grateful.
That cousin that insists on sitting in the living room, and eating alone, with their headphones on - maybe try and strike up a conversation about what interests them. Don't be swayed by their shock and awe response. Try and listen for what they're NOT saying.
Is this the first major Holiday after the loss of a family member? Be sensitive, but there IS a huge elephant in the room - maybe try and ease memories of them into the turkey carving, or a certain dish someone made, or is missing.
Just remember, yes, there is ALWAYS something to be thankful for - some people may need to be shown, not told. Be subtle, and make their day without them even knowing it...
Have a good day, and be safe... #ENDtheSILENCEofVIOLENCE #EtSoV
